There’s A Notable Shift Occurring
Pastor’s Perspective Column, for the Stevens County Times

What is going on in America? A lot. Some good, some great, some not so good, and some downright awful. Our President has brokered his eighth peace agreement, the last of which freed all the remaining hostages held by the terrorist organization of Hamas that committed the despicable massacre of innocent Jews of all ages on October 7, 2023. Thank you, Mr. President!
As of this writing, the major news media are quiet about these unprecedented international peace accords and the end of wars, and instead, they are all upset about the “Big Beautiful Ballroom” that President Trump is building without taxpayer money. And to top it off, the Senate Democrats, unlike 13 times before, have refused to pass a “Clean Continuing Resolution” to fund the government at current levels as they finish the details of the 12 appropriation bills.
Then, of course, there were the head-scratching “No Kings” protests recently, which included funding from some socialist and communist affiliated organizations like the Communist Party of the USA (CPUSA), and George Soros’ Open Society Foundations. The leftists marching in these protests are the same ones who demanded compliance with all COVID-19 vaccine and mask mandates for all ages, or you lose your job. They worked to silence anyone who questioned the efficacy of the experimental mRNA shots and told business owners their work was nonessential and sent law enforcement to shut them down. So, I have to ask, who has been acting like a King?
America is in what I would call a combination of a political, cultural, and spiritual civil war. The divisions within these three areas of society are obvious and concerning. However, I believe something is stirring in America right now that has the potential to bring lasting good to “we the people” and the generations that follow. That is, IF we will pursue God and His Truth, and speak up, stand up, and not give up.
As reported by several news networks, Bible sales in America have increased from 33% to over 41% in the last two years, defying trends in nonfiction books, which have decreased by about 6%. Downloaded Bibles and related Apps have skyrocketed by over 79% in the same time period, and Christian music streaming is up over 50%. More and more, faith-based films are taking top spots over many secular movies.
Furthermore, large worship gatherings and mass baptisms are happening on college campuses and beaches that remind us of the Jesus movement of the ’60s and ’70s. Most notable is the overwhelming positive response to the ongoing TPUSA events that have occurred since Charlie Kirk’s assassination. There can be no doubt that Christianity is currently surging in distinct sectors of our American society.
And “across the pond” in the UK, as a March 18, 2025, online article by Christianity Today reported, “We are at the centre of a significant cultural shift regarding matters of faith and religion…Atheism, once considered by modern society to be the view of most rational adults, no longer seems to carry the same weight or appeal. Young people - Gen Z in particular - are statistically far less likely to identify as atheists than their parents.”
Even more good news comes from Eric Kaufman of The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE). He surveyed 60,000 undergraduate students this year (2025), which showed a significant decline in trans and queer identity among young Americans. They found “the percentage of Gen Z identifying as transgender or nonbinary has dropped by nearly half over the past two years, with a notable decrease from 6.8% in 2023 to 3.6% in 2025. This decline is even greater within elite institutions, where the number of students identifying as non-binary has fallen from 9% in 2023 to 3% in 2025.”
Even before President Trump’s second term and executive order recognizing only two genders, other nations had acted in strong opposition to childhood gender transitioning. The New York Post reported that “the United Kingdom, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and the Australian state of Queensland had moved to ban or restrict puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones for minors.” (By Chadwick Moore, Published July 26, 2025)
In further victory over the vile practice of medically sterilizing and surgically mutilating minors, in a landmark June ruling, the “U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday (7/16/25) upheld laws in roughly half the states that ban gender affirming medical care for transgender minors. The vote was 6-3, along ideological lines.” (June 18, 2025, NPR).
In line with this monumental life-saving decision, over the last several months, the Department of Justice launched an investigation into more than 20 doctors and gender clinics for minors. To top it off, the nation’s largest youth-gender clinic, the Center for Transyouth Health and Development at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, closed up shop (approx. July 2025).
And as the biased so-called “legacy media” continues to lose viewers and lay off workers, TPUSA has announced it will sponsor an “Alternative Super Bowl Halftime Show” celebrating Faith, Family, and Freedom. By all accounts, this alternative show looks to eclipse the NFL’s offering, featuring a controversial, alleged trans singer. What kind of message will that send?
Without becoming a theocracy, America needs to renew our faith in the God of our forefathers, the God of the Bible. George Washington affirmed this very truth in his farewell address:
“Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports… And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.”
If you are a follower of Christ, America needs your witness, prayers, and participation in the affairs of a civil society. If the people Jesus said are the “Light of the World” stay home, all that is left is a society stumbling through the darkness we allowed to come to pass. As for me, “this little light of mine, I am going to let it shine, shine, shine” until Jesus comes. How about you?
